THE PASSING OF YOUR ANIMAL COMPANION:
PREPLANNING
Preplanning involves making the decisions
about what your wishes will be once your pet dies. Decisions
about whether you wish a burial or cremation to take place, when and
where to euthanize, how to celebrate the years of companionship you
shared together. All of these decisions are part of the
process of your faithful companion's passing.
It is often recommended that ceremonial
plans and other arrangements be made before your loved one leaves. Preplanning helps to rid you
of the weight these necessities bring to bear in your time of
sorrow. You can decide
on the matters of burial, cremation, ceremony visual commemoration
and so forth in a thoughtful, considered manner.
THE
UNEXPECTED DEATH
Death
of a companion animal can occur
unexpectedly through
accident or natural causes. When
this happens, the shock of, and often anger at, the loss of our pet
causes high levels of anguish and raises questions. What do I do? Do I have to take my animal
to the vet? Can I
arrange to have him or her privately cremated?
Having plans in place helps make this
final journey less difficult.
ANTICIPATED
DEATH DUE TO ILLNESS OR AGE
When we know that our
pet is suffering from a life threatening illness or is coming close
to the end of their time with us because of a good age, preplanning
helps us to deal with that reality.
It also gives us an opportunity to make choices that
appropriately reflect how we feel about our beloved companion. Whatever we choose, it is a
part of the healing process as we anticipate our loss.
